Abstract

One hundred and fifty children aged 5, 6, 7, and 8 were given the Goodenough-Harris Draw-A-Person Test (GHDAP), and their scores on the test items were analyzed using three-way multidimensional scaling. Results indicate that although the test assesses drawings using a single continuous scale, the test items appear to load on two developmental dimensions: a "core feature" dimension encompassing those items assessing the presence or absence of body parts, and an "elaboration" dimension containing those items assessing the complexity and organization of body part portrayal. Interpretations of the two dimensions from the viewpoint of current theories of drawing development are considered.
